When Protruding Ears Cause Distress
The psychological burden of protruding ears often begins in childhood but also affects many adults in their daily well-being.
- •Limited Hairstyle Choices: Many affected individuals consistently wear their hair down to cover the ears and avoid short haircuts or ponytails.
- •Psychological Strain: Teasing during school years often leaves lasting marks. Even in adulthood, looking in the mirror can feel bothersome.
- •Asymmetries: Often the ear position is uneven – one ear protrudes more than the other, disturbing facial harmony.
The cause usually lies in a malformation of the ear cartilage or a missing cartilage fold (antihelix). A small surgical procedure can permanently correct this.
Gentle Reshaping of the Ear Cartilage
In the surgical ear correction (otoplasty), a fine incision is made behind the ear. From there, the ear cartilage is exposed and gently reshaped through special incision and suture techniques and inclined closer to the head.
Depending on the initial findings, we replicate missing cartilage folds or remove excess cartilage. The sutures used hold the new shape securely in position until the tissue has firmly grown together in the desired orientation.
Why an Ear Correction at MEDICAL ART?
Natural Appearance
The ears are positioned so that they harmonise with the face and do not lie unnaturally flat.
Invisible Scars
Since the skin incision runs exactly in the fold behind the auricle, the fine scar is virtually invisible later.
Local Anaesthesia
In adults, the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia (with twilight sedation if desired) and is generally low in pain.
Stable Result
The corrected position of the ears is designed for permanent stability.
Experiences of Our Patients
Costs and Insurance Coverage
In adults, ear pinning is generally classified by health insurers as an aesthetic service and is not reimbursed. For children up to the age of 14, insurers often cover the costs when demonstrated psychological distress is present.
We prepare a detailed treatment and cost plan for you in advance according to the medical fee schedule (GOÄ).
Your Investment Framework
The costs for otoplasty include the surgical procedure, suture material, and aftercare.
- ✓The exact costs depend on the technique applied (cartilage scoring, suture technique) and the form of anaesthesia.
- ✓Through our billing partner, we offer you the option of paying the surgery costs in convenient instalments.
The Path to the New Ear Shape
Examination & Consultation
We analyse the structure of your ear cartilage and discuss in the mirror how much the ears should be pinned back to appear natural.
The Operation
The procedure takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia.
Aftercare
After the operation, you wear a head bandage for several days. Afterwards, wearing a soft headband (especially at night) for several weeks is important.
Is the Procedure Painful?
The operation itself is generally low in pain due to the local anaesthesia. After the anaesthesia wears off, there may be a slight throbbing or pulling at the ears in the first days. This can be well treated with standard painkillers.
Mehr zu unseren Comfort-Optionen →For many patients, ear pinning means an enormous gain in quality of life and freedom – finally they can wear the hairstyle they want without hiding.
